UICC is pleased to announce a call for proposals for the following international training opportunities:

American Cancer Society International Fellowships for Beginning Investigators Grants

Application deadline 1st November 2013
WHAT· 12 month International Fellowship· Award value of USD 50,000
Aims:

  • To foster a bi-directional flow of research knowledge, experience, expertise, and innovation between countries
  • To support the promotion of cancer control in developing countries through epidemiology, cancer control etc
  • To advance the academic career development of beginning cancer investigators through clinical, behavioural or translational research projects

WHO
Beginning investigators or clinicians:

  • Who possess a terminal, advanced degree in their field
  • Who hold an academic university or hospital position with an explicit commitment to return to their home institute
  • In the early phases of their career as an independent investigator and no longer under research mentoring
  • The research proposed must be conducted at not-for-profit institutions
  • Cannot be in residence in the host laboratory at time of application or during the review process

WHY APPLY
Former Grantees report:

  • Knowledge and research skills were significantly increased, thus preparing them to better compete internationally
  • Publications with their Host mentors resulted from their ACSBI Fellowship research
  • Mentoring received in the Host Institutions was extremely important and very effective for their subsequent professional development
  • Ability to obtain research funding is increased upon return to their home institution
  • Unique opportunity for international research

Yamagiwa-Yoshida Memorial International Cancer Study Grants
Application deadline 15th January 2014

WHAT

  • 3 months International Fellowship
  • Award value of USD 10,000

Aims:

  • To initiate, set-up or pursue bilateral cancer research projects with collaborating investigators abroad
  • To receive training in advanced experimental research methods and techniques
  • To exploit complementary skills and material

WHO
Investigators, epidemiologists, public health professionals:

  • Who hold a PhD (or equivalent degree*) for at least 2 years prior to the YY Fellowship application closing date applied for
  • Who are actively engaged in cancer research
  • Who have recent publications in the international peer-reviewed litterature

*Please visit the YY Fellowships webpage on the UICC website for the list of frequently awarded research doctorate degreee titles accepted as representing degrees equivalent in content and level to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. First-professional degrees will not be considered in themselves as PhD-equivalent, even if recipients carry the title.

    of the former grantees feel their fellowship significantly increased their knowledge and research skills, thus preparing them to better compete internationally
  • Publications
    73%
    of grantees have published with their Host mentors as a result of their Fellowship whilst 77% of them are still collaborating with their Hosts
  • Mentoring received in the Host Institutions
    83% of the former grantees consider the mentoring received in the Host Institution as extremely important and very effective for their subsequent professional development
  • Ability to define research direction and build research programme
    YY experience helped define the research direction of about 80% of the former grantees and 69% of the former grantees were able to build their own research programme as result of their fellowship
