18.12.2015 | Eduardo Cazap Holiday greetings

Dear colleagues and friends,

Close to the end of 2015, I would like to share with you some thoughts about the current situation in the global fight against cancer.

One of the biggest challenges is the economic case for cancer control. Despite the larger death toll from cancer, a large portion of health-related funding to low- and middle-income countries is invested in treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. While HIV/AIDS care receives $6.2 billion, with 2.1 million deaths and malaria care receives $1.3 billion with 711,000 deaths, cancer care only receives $168 million with 4.8 million deaths (2%).

The urgent need of a Global Cancer Fund is starting to be recognized by some global leaders. We expect that in 2016 the cancer community will actively launch and support initiatives in this regard.

As Professor David Bloom says “human health is fundamentally a national asset, which means that spending on the promotion and protection of health is more like a fruitful investment than consumption expenditure.”

We are all committed to making our maximum efforts to thwart the impact of cancer. We will achieve this with clever strategies, more action, innovative ideas, courage and determination.

My very best personal wishes and a happy and healthy holiday season for you and your loved ones,

Eduardo Cazap
