Gilberto Schwartsmann is Professor of Oncology at the Federal University in Porto Alegre, Brazil and Head of Medical Oncology at Hospital Mario Kroeff in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Medicine and director of the South American Office for Anticancer drug Development.

He was member of the ASCO Internacional Affairs Commitee and the ASCO Scientific Program Committee. He is a member of the Editorial Borrad of various internacional journals, such as Annals of Oncology, The Oncologist and Cancer Treatment Reviews.

So far, he has published about 100 papers included in PubMed and several chapters and books in the field of oncology. He completed his postgraduate studies in oncology at the University of London, his PhD thesis at the Free University in Amsterdam, and his postdoctoral studies at the US Nacional Cancer Institute.
